Herbert Stencil and Margavine di Chiave work at the London Foreign Office. "Before 1945 he had been slothful" until he starts his quest for V. (p.54). He found his first clues of V in 1939. These details are revealed at a party held by Fergus Mixolydian, who reminds Stencil of himself before the beginning of his quest. Invited here by Esther, Stencil meets the Whole Sick Crew, including Raoul, Slab and Melvin (who plays his guitar and sings folk songs). As the party winds down, each of Schoenberg's quartets is played on the record player.
